Know which parts are naturally smooth
The AKC standard contrasts dense body curls with a smooth face, a smooth throat patch and a tail whose curls stop near the base. That tapering tail is a characteristic feature, not a reason to try to make the hair match the body. Have a groomer familiar with the breed show you the different areas and explain brushing, trimming and how to recognize a tangle that needs help. The standard permits a natural or trimmed presentation, while preserving visible curl and texture. A practical care note can distinguish routine home work from what the groomer will do at appointments. If a normally coated area develops new hair loss, irritation or discomfort, seek veterinary assessment rather than assuming every smooth patch is normal for the breed. Photographs of the dog’s usual coat can help describe a change without becoming a diagnosis.[1]
Water-dog heritage does not replace preparation
AKC describes an energetic sporting companion that benefits from shared activity and positive training. If you want to pursue a water sport, first arrange appropriate instruction and discuss conditioning with your veterinarian. A breed’s history does not establish that an individual knows how to enter, exit or cope with a particular body of water. Plan supervision and a safe exit before any session, and do not force a reluctant dog into the water. For ordinary days, include suitable walks, play and learning rather than saving all activity for occasional ambitious trips. Reserve time for care afterward: AKC recommends at least weekly brushing and regular trimming, beginning with gentle handling while young. Ask for a routine that fits the actual coat and activity. A training session can be short and rewarding, and a grooming session can end before frustration; neither needs to become a test of endurance.[2]
Frequently asked questions
Is the smooth “rat tail” normal in an Irish Water Spaniel?
Yes. The standard describes curls near the root followed by smooth hair as the tail tapers. New skin changes or loss of hair elsewhere should be assessed separately.
Source [1]Must an Irish Water Spaniel be left entirely untrimmed?
No. The AKC standard permits natural or trimmed presentation while retaining the coat’s curl and texture. Ask a breed-experienced groomer to demonstrate suitable maintenance.
