Consider the night shift as well as the daytime visit
The FCI standard specifically describes greater vigilance at night. A relaxed meeting in daylight therefore leaves an important question unanswered. Ask the current keeper what happens when people approach after dark, when neighboring animals move nearby and when a familiar person returns late. For your property, identify the gates used by delivery drivers, family and emergency visitors, then establish how the dog will be separated before someone enters. Include a lit route that does not require an unfamiliar person to walk through the dog’s resting area. On a farm, discuss the actual stock and previous experience rather than assuming any guardian puppy can immediately be left with every animal. These are planning questions, not a prediction that an individual will behave in one fixed way.[1]
Evaluate care access before relying on the rustic appearance
The breed’s short-to-medium dense coat is less elaborate than a long corded coat, but the dog still needs accessible grooming and routine handling. AKC recommends regular grooming, nail care and ear checks. Make space for the dog to stand or lie comfortably while you perform a brief check, and practice calm handling before it becomes a difficult task with a full-sized adult. Ask a veterinarian or groomer to demonstrate any procedure you have not learned. For a prospective puppy, request the parents’ actual health examination records and ask about problems reported in their relatives. The AKC care page does not provide a named breed screening panel; do not treat that omission as evidence that screening is unnecessary or that inherited conditions cannot occur. Have your veterinarian help interpret the available records and decide what further questions matter.[2]
Frequently asked questions
Is the Rafeiro do Alentejo primarily a herding or guarding dog?
The FCI standard identifies its role as protecting property and livestock. That is different from selecting a dog to gather and move a flock on command; ask about the individual’s training and experience for the work you need.
Source [1]Does a calm daytime manner mean it will ignore activity at night?
No. The standard specifically notes nighttime vigilance. Ask about evening behavior and plan safe access for late arrivals instead of judging suitability from a single daytime visit.
Source [1]Does a short coat make care almost unnecessary?
No. AKC recommends routine grooming, nail care and ear checks. Consider whether you can comfortably handle the adult dog for these tasks, not just whether the coat looks easy to brush.
