Check whether the description means Medio, Grande or Pequeno
The AKC Portuguese Podengo standard covers the Medio and Grande: medium and large dogs with different historical hunting roles. The FCI standard groups three sizes under Portuguese Podengo, including the small variety. This difference in naming can make two accurate breed descriptions appear inconsistent. When asking about a puppy or rescue dog, record its variety and expected adult dimensions before choosing a crate, harness or transport arrangement. Ask which adult relatives you can meet, and evaluate the actual dog’s routine rather than averaging every size into one profile. The larger and medium dogs have a hunting background; small-pet introductions therefore need management, not an assumption that family affection will override pursuit. If you are researching the small variety, use the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno profile for the corresponding size and care discussion.[1]
Check escape routes as well as exercise space
The AKC standard describes the Medio’s rabbit-hunting work as chasing, flushing and retrieving; it may jump into cover or dig to reach prey. These abilities matter in a companion’s yard, too. Before giving access, inspect the fence base, gate closure and places where nearby furniture or stored items create an easy route out. Watch the first visits rather than assuming that a yard which contained a previous dog will contain this one. Use a secure walking arrangement near wildlife, and practice returning to you where distractions are manageable. For a sitter, identify the usual exits and demonstrate the gate routine. This is a practical response to the breed’s described working abilities, not a prediction that every Podengo will escape or a reason to replace shared activity with permanent confinement.[1]
Choose grooming and introductions for the dog in front of you
AKC distinguishes smooth and wire coats and advises regular brushing to remove dead hair, with somewhat less grooming generally needed for the smooth coat. Do not automatically apply a terrier stripping routine to a wirehaired Podengo: the AKC care page specifically says neither coat should be stripped. Ask a groomer familiar with the breed to demonstrate maintenance and help distinguish ordinary shedding from a skin problem. The breed can also be reserved with unfamiliar people. Let visitors give the dog room to approach rather than reaching straight over its head or insisting on contact. Reward comfortable engagement and keep early meetings manageable. If you arrange a carer, introduce that person before a long stay so the first meeting is not also a sudden change of home and routine.[3]
Frequently asked questions
Does this Portuguese Podengo page include the Pequeno?
This page focuses on the Medio and Grande covered by the AKC Portuguese Podengo standard. The small Portuguese Podengo Pequeno has a separate profile.
Source [1]Why do some sources describe three Podengo sizes and others two?
The FCI standard includes small, medium and large under Portuguese Podengo. The AKC standard linked here covers medium and large. Check the registry and variety before combining measurements from different sources.
Source [2]Should a wirehaired Portuguese Podengo be hand-stripped like a terrier?
Do not assume that routine applies. AKC’s Podengo care guidance advises brushing out dead hair and says neither coat should be stripped. Ask a breed-experienced groomer to show suitable care for the individual coat.
Source [3]Does a large fenced yard replace supervised activity for a Medio?
No. The AKC standard describes jumping and digging in rabbit work. Check gates and fence edges, supervise a new dog’s access, and provide walks and learning activities appropriate to that individual instead of assuming space alone meets its needs.
