Look beyond the curled tail when comparing Japanese breeds
FCI identifies both hunting and companionship as uses for the Hokkaido and describes its historical association with the Ainu. An alert, enduring hunting dog is not defined by the same household expectations as every other dog with upright ears and a curled tail. Ask a breeder or rescue about the individual’s experience around unfamiliar people, other animals and busy public places. Discuss how introductions are managed and what support is available if the dog is uncomfortable. Do not interpret a standard’s praise of judgment as proof that a puppy can make safe choices around wildlife or visitors. The FCI height ranges are 48.5–51.5 cm for males and 45.5–48.5 cm for females. Meet adults where possible, and assess handling and activity needs as well as dimensions before committing.[1]
Prepare for the undercoat change, not a decorative haircut
The dense undercoat is distinct from the coarser outer hair. AKC describes seasonal shedding and recommends brushing out dead coat rather than routine trimming or shaving. Ask a groomer to demonstrate a comfortable technique on the actual dog, especially when loose undercoat is accumulating. Keep sessions manageable and stop if the skin is painful or the dog is distressed. A coat adapted to cold is not permission to ignore weather, shelter or comfort during an outing. Plan activities around present conditions and the individual’s health. Secure outdoor boundaries and well-fitted walking equipment need attention too: check gates and the transfer into a vehicle before an exciting outing. Include a supervised toy check in the return-home routine, removing damaged items with loose pieces. These preparations are more useful than assuming a capable hunting breed will automatically avoid every household hazard.[2]
Frequently asked questions
Is blue-black pigment on a Hokkaido’s tongue necessarily outside the breed standard?
No. FCI explicitly says blue-black tongue coloration is not a fault. That describes pigmentation; new lesions, pain or other changes still deserve veterinary attention.
Source [1]Does the Hokkaido normally need a routinely shaved coat?
AKC recommends regular brushing to remove dead hair and does not recommend routine shaving. Discuss matting, skin problems or any medically necessary clipping with the appropriate professional rather than using shaving as the default seasonal routine.
