A corgi by an apartment window overlooking foggy San Francisco hills

Start with the appointment, not the postcard.

A San Francisco dog day can involve a steep neighborhood walk, a crowded bus and a beach governed by a different agency from the park next door. Make a small plan that survives those transitions: one permitted route, one transport backup and one provider who can actually accommodate your dog.

  1. Moving here: arrange licensing and transfer vaccination records before choosing daycare.
  2. Planning a coastal outing: identify the land manager and the exact dog-use boundary. A place name is not permission.
  3. Booking care: check eligibility before comparing prices. Weight limits and age ranges can rule a service out.
  4. Facing an urgent problem: call a receiving hospital and arrange suitable transport. Ordinary-pet Muni access is restricted.

These are selected starting points, not a complete neighborhood directory, a provider ranking or a live availability service. We have not personally tested the businesses below.

Three places. Three different jobs.

Use this map to locate a neighborhood dog area, a coastal starting point or the emergency hospital. The pins identify destinations; they do not outline legal off-leash boundaries or show current closures.

Alamo Square: keep the boundary visible

Hayes and Steiner streets give you a useful neighborhood reference. Find the signed dog play area after arriving; the designation does not turn the entire park, playground or neighboring sidewalks into an off-leash space. If your dog struggles with passing people or dogs, start with a leashed perimeter walk and leave before the outing becomes overwhelming. Check the city facility page for the official location.

Crissy Field: check the federal rules before leaving home

East Beach is an orientation point, not a promise that every adjoining beach, lawn or wildlife area allows the same activity. Read the National Park Service dog-area guidance for the particular section you intend to use. Take a leash even when planning a permitted voice-and-sight-control outing. If the boundary or current notice is unclear, stay on a permitted leashed route.

City parks, federal coastline and transit have separate rules.

License the dog in the right jurisdiction

San Francisco Animal Care & Control says dogs older than four months need a license; new residents have 30 days after establishing residency. License duration depends on the remaining validity of the rabies vaccination. Gather the current certificate and, where relevant, spay/neuter documentation before applying. Residents outside San Francisco need their own jurisdiction's process.

Keep a digital copy available to the person handling the dog, plus the issuing veterinarian's contact. A vaccination booking confirmation is not the certificate itself. Confirm current fees and appointment arrangements with Animal Care & Control rather than relying on an old price sheet.

Golden Gate Park is not Golden Gate National Recreation Area

The city dog play area directory covers designated municipal spaces, including areas within Golden Gate Park. Federal coastal land follows National Park Service rules. Before using Crissy Field or Ocean Beach, check the current map and restrictions for that stretch of shore, including wildlife protection.

For federal regulations, use the current laws and policies page. It links the enforceable superintendent's compendium. An older proposed dog-management plan or a travel blog is not a substitute for the rules currently in force. Never use another owner's off-leash dog as proof of permission.

Muni can change an otherwise simple care booking

The SFMTA ordinary-pet policy excludes pets during weekday peaks, 5–9 a.m. and 3–7 p.m. Off peak, only one pet is allowed per vehicle. Dogs must be leashed and muzzled, riding on the owner's lap or under the seat; the owner pays an additional fare equal to their own. Service animals have a separate policy.

Do not schedule a time-sensitive pickup assuming the next vehicle will accept your dog. A pet already aboard can mean another wait. Ask the provider for a collection window and agree on a backup ride whose driver accepts your dog. Introduce any required muzzle gradually before travel; an appointment morning is a poor time to test unfamiliar equipment. These are Muni rules, not a statement about BART or every Bay Area operator.

Published prices help only when the service fits.

Prices below are first-party examples checked October 6, 2026, in US dollars. They are not city averages, guaranteed quotes or endorsements. Ask for the final written scope, cancellation policy and current availability.

GROOMING · POLK STREET

WAGS on Polk

1840 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA 94109 · 415-409-2472.

The provider lists a small-dog full-service bath from $70 and a full groom from $120. A bath and a haircut are different bookings; coat condition and handling needs can change the quote. Its published schedule is 9 a.m.–4 p.m. daily.

Send a recent coat photo and describe mats, sensitivities and previous grooming difficulties. Ask whether the quoted scope includes drying, brushing, nails and ears, what would trigger extra charges, and how you will be contacted before additional work. Confirm handover and collection times.

The website also references a boarding partner in Novato. Do not assume boarding takes place at the Polk Street salon. Confirm the actual destination and transport separately.

DAYCARE & BOARDING · GUERRERO STREET

Walking Buddies

381 Guerrero Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 · 415-425-1594.

The FAQ lists full-day daycare at $50, half-day at $35 and boarding from $100 per day. It requires dogs to be under 50 lb, spayed/neutered and current on rabies, Bordetella and DAPP vaccination. A large dog may therefore be ineligible even if the location suits you.

Published daycare hours are weekdays 7 a.m.–7 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Ask how a boarding day is counted, what happens after the collection deadline and whether your dog needs an introductory visit.

The FAQ mentions a $9 holiday surcharge but displays an older holiday calendar ending in January 2026. Confirm your actual travel dates and surcharge in writing; that calendar does not establish the charge for a later holiday.

TRAINING · CHECK AGE AND COHORT

Prime Paw: Level 1 Foundations

The course page describes four weekly group sessions for dogs aged 18 weeks to 12 months, with a maximum of six dogs and a preliminary assessment to establish suitability.

There is a price discrepancy: the course page shows $225, while the homepage shows $280 for Level 1. Neither should be treated as a confirmed checkout total until the provider resolves it.

Ask for the selected cohort's address, start date, vaccine requirements, missed-session policy and final price. Do not assume every programme uses the same venue. Group foundations are not automatically suitable for a dog that cannot safely cope near other dogs; describe that concern during the assessment.

Compare the same booking, including the awkward bits.

First eliminate services that cannot accept your dog. Then compare the same grooming scope, daycare duration or boarding dates. Include required extras, transport, holiday charges, late collection and tax where applicable. Ask whether a deposit is credited to the total; do not count it twice.

Fog is not a full weather plan.

Check the National Weather Service Bay Area forecast and alerts for the actual destination. Conditions at a shoreline can differ from your starting neighborhood. This page does not provide live weather, surf conditions or closure status.

Before a coastal trip, choose a dry-land fallback and an easy exit. Carry drinking water, a towel and appropriate layers for the handler. If conditions or posted restrictions make the beach unsuitable, change the route rather than extending the outing to justify the journey.

A walker handover that fits a real apartment

Give the walker the entrance and buzzer procedure privately, not in a public review. Describe elevator or stair use, narrow-doorway handling and whether your dog can pass other dogs comfortably. Agree on a quiet route if group outings are unsuitable. Ask for a short report of the route, toilet breaks and anything unexpected—not just a pickup photograph.

Copy into your care note: “Usual route: __. Permitted dog-area entrance: __. Leash stays on until: __. If the area is closed or too busy, use: __. Pickup/return window: __. Contact me before changing the route or adding group transport. Vet contact and transport backup: __.”

Use your dog's observed response to adjust the next outing. The PupNudge assessment can help organize routine questions; it does not diagnose illness or replace a veterinarian.

Keep the emergency plan separate from the outing.

San Francisco Veterinary Hospital's emergency referral page identifies SAGE San Francisco among 24-hour receiving facilities. Save the Alabama Street contact above and call for current arrival instructions and receiving arrangements. A published 24-hour service does not tell you today's wait or capacity.

If your dog is seriously unwell, call a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting to finish this checklist. Tell the team what happened, when it happened, your dog's approximate weight and your estimated travel time. Follow their instructions; do not improvise medication or home treatment from a city guide.

Agree on a transport option in advance, including how a second person could help if needed. Muni's ordinary-pet restrictions make it an unreliable default for an urgent trip. This page cannot triage symptoms, summon transport or establish which hospital is nearest to you.

San Francisco decisions, answered.

Can I take the same off-leash approach at Golden Gate Park and Crissy Field?

No. The city designates dog play areas; the federal park has its own maps and wildlife restrictions. Check the precise area, not just the destination name.

Can a dog ride Muni to a weekday 4 p.m. appointment?

An ordinary pet cannot ride during the 3–7 p.m. weekday peak. Arrange a different ride or appointment time. Service animals follow a separate policy.

Is a $70 bath the same as a $120 groom?

No. They are different published starting services at WAGS. Request the actual scope for your dog's coat and handling needs before comparing another salon.

Does the Walking Buddies price help me book a 60 lb dog?

Its FAQ says under 50 lb. Establish eligibility first; do not assume an extra payment overrides the limit. Ask another provider about a suitable arrangement.

Which Prime Paw price should I budget for?

The two provider pages disagree. Ask for a written price for your cohort, venue and included sessions. This guide records the discrepancy rather than deciding which page controls checkout.

Can a sitter use my usual coastal route without checking notices?

Give them the official rule page and a fallback. The note should identify the entry and leash boundary. A familiar route can still be affected by a notice or restriction.

Is the map an off-leash boundary map?

No. It locates selected places. Use the city facility guidance or NPS map for access rules and read signs on arrival.

Are these the best or currently available providers?

They are named examples with first-party terms, not rankings or live inventory. Confirm fit, availability and final costs directly. Report outdated details so the guide can be corrected.
