RICHMOND · THE CITY FIELD GUIDE

Richmond.
Current address.
Count the days.

Save Richmond's current 24/7 emergency address, check which locality licenses your dog, and compare boarding by billable day rather than by night.

An old Cary Street contact and a nightly-price assumption can both send a care plan in the wrong direction. Start with the destination and the billing terms that apply now.

Do not let an old Cary Street pin choose the hospital

On the check date, Virginia Veterinary Centers' own location directory marked its 3312 West Cary Street site as temporarily closed. That conflicts with older referral lists still describing the address as a 24-hour destination. Use the hospital's current information before navigating, rather than relying on the age or familiar wording of a saved contact.

VVC Short Pump publishes 24/7 emergency care at 4300 Greybull Drive, Henrico, VA 23233, phone 804-353-9000. Save the address with the number: a familiar telephone contact does not necessarily mean the physical destination is unchanged. This hospital serves the Richmond area but is in Henrico, and its listing is not a live report of capacity or travel time.

Open the current Short Pump destination. Call for arrival instructions when possible. A routine clinic appointment, urgent-care service and a round-the-clock emergency hospital are different arrangements; a booking form is not the right channel for an immediate emergency.

A Richmond mailing address does not settle the license jurisdiction

The City of Richmond's Animal Care and Control guidance requires an annual $10 license for residents' dogs aged four months and older. It also requires rabies vaccination from that age and describes separate sterilization and breeding-permit obligations. Use the City's current requirements for a city residence; ask the relevant county for an address outside the city rather than applying one rule across every Richmond-area postcode.

The City's leash guidance is explicit that an electronic collar does not replace physical restraint. For a walk away from home, bring an actual leash and use the posted boundaries of a designated run. Being licensed does not make every open lawn an off-leash area.

GRTC's rider rules distinguish service animals from other contained animals that do not create a hazard or disturbance. Confirm the dog's containment arrangement before depending on a particular bus trip. A leash alone should not be treated as proof that an ordinary pet can board, and public transport should not be assumed to meet an urgent hospital journey.

Use Chimborazo's dog area or keep the river outing leashed

The City describes Chimborazo's dog park on the eastern lower terrace, with separate large- and small-dog areas. The main park address is 3201 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23223; the dog area is a specific destination within the park, not the playground or every part of the hillside.

A James River trail outing is different. Friends of James River Park's January 2026 guidance calls for dogs to stay leashed and for owners to remove waste. Its trail guidance also asks users to avoid wet or muddy surfaces when footprints or tire marks are being left behind. Ancarrow's Landing is described as a flat 2.5-mile loop that dries slowly after rain; flat does not mean suitable in every condition.

Choose the outing before leaving home. For permitted off-leash activity, use the dog enclosure and the correct size area. For a trail day, take a controlled, leashed route that fits the dog and current conditions. A changed weather plan can be a shorter permitted walk rather than another muddy trail or an impromptu swim.

Friday to Sunday is not automatically two units of boarding

Dog's Day Inn, 213 Granite Spring Road, Richmond, VA 23225, lists a single dog's standard accommodation at $45 per day, with daycare at $30 per day and grooming by estimate. Its billing policy counts the admission day, applies another day after the 10 a.m. checkout cutoff and treats Sunday as a full boarding day. The pricing page gives Sunday collection as 4–5 p.m.

Under those published terms, a Friday arrival followed by Sunday collection may mean three chargeable days: $135 at the stated $45 rate before other agreed charges, rather than $90 calculated as two nights. Confirm the actual billable days in writing. The pricing page prohibits holiday and out-of-hours handovers; do not plan an unsupported late pickup because a different FAQ sentence mentions an after-hours fee. Call 804-745-7173 to resolve the terms for your dates.

The Dog Stop's West Broad menu distinguishes full-day daycare above five hours at $40 from a weekday half day of up to five hours at $30; it says half-day pricing does not apply on weekends. Its local address is 9132 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23294, phone 804-716-9735. The two businesses' $30 entries therefore do not establish equal hours or identical admission conditions.

The Dog Stop lists influenza, Bordetella, rabies and distemper records for care admission. Have its team confirm the dog's assessment and usable service before buying a pass. A discounted pass has no value for a schedule or dog it cannot accommodate.

Choose the billing units from the written quote. The calculator does not infer them from a calendar or rank providers by suitability.

A tidy-up and a full haircut are different Starling Drive appointments

Pooches and Smooches, 1001 Starling Drive, Richmond, VA 23229, lists medium-dog bath service from $57, tidy-up grooming from $71 and a full groom with a haircut from $85. Its doodle pricing depends on size, behavior, coat length and condition. Use the appointment's actual scope, not just the word groom, when comparing an estimate with another salon.

The published Tuesday–Saturday walk-in hours concern nail trims; they do not confirm that a full haircut is available without booking. Call 804-447-0646 for the dog's coat-specific estimate. This is a regional provider example, not a claim that every postal Richmond address falls under the City's licensing rules.

Decide whether the handler attends or the dog goes to school

Richmond SPCA's owner-attended classes use positive reinforcement. Its Canine Manners course is described for dogs aged six months and older, over seven one-hour sessions, with the first class for people only. Contact 804-521-1332 for the appropriate course, current fee and training venue. The class page does not establish a single fee for every course.

School for Dogs is a different commitment: $70 per day with monthly registration and specified weekly schedules. The published drop-off window is 7–9 a.m., with pickup from 4–6 p.m. That is not an ordinary drop-in daycare rate or a promise of a place on the next workday. Check the program's vaccination and spay/neuter requirements before planning the handover.

Information checked for this guide

Checked October 23–24, 2026 using the linked City, transit operator, park partner and service providers. The hospital's current directory takes precedence over an old referral list; temporary closure is not described as permanent closure. Prices are individual providers' menus, not a Richmond average, and no appointment, visit or live capacity has been verified. Use the provider-comparison checklist and report changed details.
