PORTLAND · THE CITY FIELD GUIDE

Right place.
Right time.
Ready for rain.

Check Portland’s off-leash schedules, compare local daycare, boarding, grooming and training costs, and save DoveLewis’ emergency contact.

A lunchtime dog area may share a school field. A boarding pickup may have a deadline. Plan the small details that make Portland care work.

In Portland, check the clock as well as the gate

A Portland dog-park recommendation is incomplete without its permitted time window. Some off-leash spaces share a field with other users, while others have a dedicated fence. Rain also changes what you need from a visit: getting the dog home dry and comfortable can matter more than reaching a scenic destination.

Start with the job you need done today. A lunchtime toilet break requires an allowed nearby route. A daycare booking needs an evaluation and a pickup time you can meet. A first training class needs the right prerequisites. This guide brings those decisions together without pretending to be a live park-status feed or a complete list of Portland businesses.

Two outdoor starting points with different access

Chimney Park: find the St. Johns dog enclosure

The city’s Chimney Park page gives the main entrance as 9360 North Columbia Boulevard, Portland, OR 97203, and identifies a fenced dog off-leash area. It links a dog-area map and lists wider park hours of 5 a.m.–midnight. Read the dog-area signs rather than assuming every part of the 18-acre park is off-leash.

For a first visit, keep the leash on until you are inside the appropriate enclosure with the gate secured. Look at the group before entering: containment does not establish whether the dogs present are a good match. If your dog hesitates, barks repeatedly or cannot disengage, choose a quieter permitted route rather than pushing through a first meeting. Bring your own water and a towel for the return.

Mt. Tabor: a dog-area schedule inside a larger park

The Mt. Tabor page lists the main park entrance at Southeast 60th Avenue and Salmon Street. Vehicle access is closed all Wednesday, with road gates also closed overnight. The city’s dog-area policy sets Mt. Tabor’s off-leash hours at 7 a.m.–9 p.m.; the wider park’s longer hours do not extend that permission.

For 2026, the city reports picnic-shelter reconstruction through December, closing the shelter site and two nearby paths while most of the park remains open. Check current notices and the official map before choosing your route. If your dog or caregiver cannot manage steps or slopes, agree on the exact path instead of handing over the whole park name. The park’s general accessibility features are not proof that every dog-area approach is step-free.

Maps help locate a destination; they do not confirm present closures, permitted off-leash boundaries, accessibility or the condition of a gate.

Give your walker the permitted hours, not “our usual park”

The city’s off-leash rule, effective July 13, 2025, closes Arbor Lodge, Cherry, Couch, Creston, Frazer and Hillsdale dog areas on school days from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Grant also has school-day and permitted-sports exclusions. Gabriel’s north summer and south winter areas have seasonal closures as signed. Check the intended site and current signs before allowing off-leash activity.

Handlers must keep dogs in sight and responsive to voice commands, carry a leash and leash them outside the designated area. The rule permits no more than three dogs per handler. These conditions matter even in a location where a fence is present. A caregiver visiting at noon may not have the same permission you have on an evening visit.

Portland’s dog rules require displayed license and rabies tags and prohibit pets in Tanner Springs, Whitaker Ponds, Foster Floodplain, water features and designated sports areas, among other places. Its list also prohibits pets in the Mt. Tabor amphitheater. Do not treat an attractive quiet spot, empty sports field or pond as an improvised alternative. Service-animal rules are separate.

License at the right county and use the right form

For a Multnomah County home, Animal Services provides online, veterinary-clinic and mail routes. Have the current rabies certificate ready. The published one-year dog fee is $27 for an altered dog or $42 for an intact dog; two- and three-year options are also available. It lists discounted rates for qualifying seniors and people experiencing financial hardship. Confirm your eligibility with the county instead of assuming the discount applies.

The new-license payment page is for pets never licensed in Multnomah County. An expired license or an officer’s notice should be handled through renewal/payment using the existing number, not by opening a duplicate new record. Portland-area addresses can fall in different counties; use your residential jurisdiction rather than a service provider’s marketing area.

TriMet needs an enclosed carrier for ordinary pets

TriMet’s boarding guidance requires a secure, enclosed carrier unless the animal is a service animal. A large dog on a lead is not an alternative to a carrier. Arrange suitable transport before accepting a care appointment, and tell a pet-accepting driver about the dog and restraint needs before pickup.

Local care examples: price, duration and the catch to check

These are providers’ published services checked October 6, 2026, not inspected facilities, rankings or guaranteed availability. Ask each provider to confirm your dog can attend and the written total for your dates.

Southeast Division · Daycare

Dog Days

2215 Southeast Division Street, Portland, OR 97202 · 503-894-9950. Its daycare menu lists $39 for a full day or $29 for a half-day of six hours or less, with drop-off before noon. Ten full-day visits are $370; packages are nonrefundable.

The menu separately prices a neighborhood walk and one-to-one handler time at $23 each, and a bath/blow-dry at $27–$67 depending on size and hair. Ask about the evaluation, vaccine records, rest arrangements, package expiry and collection cutoff. Do not assume individual attention or an outing is included merely because the base service is called daycare.

South Waterfront · Daycare & boarding

The Dog House Portland

3720 South Moody Avenue, Portland, OR 97239 · 503-241-5905. The rate page lists one-dog daycare at $47 up to 13 hours or $37 up to five hours. Boarding is $59 per night for one to three nights, or $57 for four or more consecutive nights.

A two-hour temperament test has no fee; longer stays incur daycare charges. Boarding checkout is within five hours of the check-in time, subject to closing; late pickup incurs a half-day daycare charge. Packages are nonrefundable and expire after one year. Nonholiday cancellations require 24 hours’ notice, holidays 48. Ask for the exact pickup deadline and late-fee amount on your reservation, plus vaccination and overnight supervision details.

Buckman · Grooming & indoor space

Good Dog PDX

1411 Southeast Stark Street, Portland, OR 97214 · 503-477-9101. Its menu lists bath services at $60 for dogs up to 30 lb, $80 up to 55 lb, $100 up to 85 lb and $120 above 85 lb. A haircut adds $50. Confirm coat and handling adjustments before booking.

The Buckman indoor park lists owner-supervised open play at $8 per dog for 60 minutes, with no children under 12 and current vaccination confirmation. Private reservations are $20 for 30 minutes or $30 for an hour. The self-wash is $20 for an hour. Confirm the slot, eligibility and cancellation terms. Slabtown does not have the indoor park, and an indoor play reservation is not a dog-sitting service.

North Portland · Reward-based classes

Oregon Humane

Portland classes use 1067 Northeast Columbia Boulevard, Portland, OR 97211. The current Basic Dog Manners page lists Intro to Skills at $25 and Building Skills at $185 for five weeks beginning September 1; Building Skills requires the introduction and is for dogs six months or older. Essential Skills classes are listed separately at $30 per class.

Use the Portland course details, not a Salem registration or the older Levels-package page. The training guidance asks owners of dogs that lunge, bark at other dogs or have bitten to contact staff about suitability. Call training and behavior at 503-802-6729. Ask which course meets your actual task and confirm current dates, price and prerequisite completion.

Compare the pickup plan, not just the nightly number

A cheaper overnight price can stop being cheaper if your return falls after checkout. Write the check-in and final pickup times into both quote requests. Include the same dog count, meals from home, required medication arrangements and any agreed bath. Ask whether tax, a holiday supplement or an evaluation charge is still to be added.

The calculator uses the totals you enter, not live prices. As a worked example, a $59 night with a confirmed $37 late-pickup charge totals $96. An alternative quoted at $80 with $10 required extras totals $90. Compare those totals only if both services can accept your dog and cover the same dates and care.

Provider A · written quote
Provider B · written quote

For prepaid daycare, also write down the last date credits can be used and what happens if your dog stops attending. A lower per-visit figure is not useful when the remaining visits become unusable. Keep the written quote and cancellation terms with the confirmation.

A rainy-day routine needs a smoke-day alternative too

Use NWS Portland for current weather before the outing, and the Oregon DEQ air-quality map when smoke is a concern. These are separate checks: cool air or drizzle does not by itself establish that outdoor exercise is suitable. This page does not report a live air-quality reading.

Oregon agriculture guidance recommends keeping pets indoors with filtered air during heavy smoke, limiting exercise and transport, monitoring respiratory symptoms and contacting a veterinarian about concerns. Moving play indoors is not automatically protective if the building’s air is smoky. Ask a daycare how it changes outdoor time and air handling during an advisory.

For ordinary wet weather, prepare the return before leaving: a paw towel, a separate coat towel, a washable resting place and somewhere to dry the lead. A walker should report the actual route and any difficulty, not simply “good walk.” If you choose a booked indoor session, allow time for the journey and cleaning without replacing the dog’s toilet break. An unfamiliar group may be a poor fallback for a dog that needs quiet.

Agree on a short permitted route close to home when the usual outing cannot happen. The caregiver should know whether a change needs your approval, when to contact the backup adult and what service time or fee still applies. For coughing, breathing difficulty, injury or an abrupt change in behavior, seek veterinary advice rather than assuming rain, mud or smoke explains everything.

Keep DoveLewis’ emergency destination separate from other appointments

The DoveLewis contact page lists the hospital at 1945 Northwest Pettygrove Street, between Northwest 19th and 20th avenues, open 24/7 with a free parking lot. Use the hospital/general number, 503-228-7281, for arrival guidance. The page also lists a specialty reception number; it is not a reason to delay an urgent call.

Call with the dog’s symptoms, when they began and any relevant exposure, then follow the team’s instructions and arrange transport. Have another adult available if your usual driver cannot help. Save the current address rather than relying on an old map pin. Emergency availability is not a guarantee of a particular wait, price or treatment; the team assesses the patient.

A Portland handoff that fits the actual outing

  • Allowed time: the named dog area, permitted off-leash period and an approved alternative.
  • Wet return: towels, entry route and where the dog can settle.
  • Care booking: evaluation result, vaccine records, final pickup cutoff and any pickup charge.
  • Transport: driver, restraint or carrier, and a backup way home.
  • Urgency: owner, backup contact, regular veterinarian and DoveLewis address and number.

Use our local-care booking questions to clarify anything the provider has not answered. Health and medication instructions belong with the dog’s veterinarian and the provider that has agreed to follow them.

Portland questions before you book or walk

Can I use Arbor Lodge’s off-leash area at lunchtime?

The city excludes school days from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Check the date and signs; a map marker does not override the schedule.

Is Mt. Tabor’s whole park off-leash until midnight?

No. The designated dog area has a separate 7 a.m.–9 p.m. window. Stay leashed outside that space.

Can a walker take a dog into Tanner Springs?

Ordinary pets are prohibited there. Choose a permitted route instead of treating a quiet park as permission.

Can my ordinary dog ride TriMet on a leash?

TriMet requires an enclosed carrier for ordinary pets. Arrange other transport if your dog cannot travel that way.

Is Good Dog PDX’s indoor park a drop-off service?

No. Its open play requires the owner to supervise. Confirm your booking at Buckman; Slabtown has no indoor park.

Does boarding checkout always run until closing?

No. The Dog House relates checkout to check-in time. Get your reservation’s precise deadline and the cost of a later collection.

Can I pay for a new county license to replace an expired one?

Use the renewal/payment route with the existing license number. The new-license page explicitly excludes expired-license payments.
