A route, a room and a realistic bill

Start with the care your dog can actually reach.

A Philadelphia care plan has three different addresses: where you live, where the dog will spend the day, and where you would go if care became urgent. A nearby map pin does not settle the journey between them. A dog that cannot travel in a sturdy carrier needs a transport arrangement other than ordinary SEPTA access. A boarding business may keep the dog in a staff member’s home rather than in its storefront. A lower nightly rate may leave daycare outside the bill.

This guide helps you put those differences into one written plan. It covers city licensing, several authorized dog runs, named care businesses with published terms, and Ryan Hospital’s emergency destination. It is not a review of every Philadelphia neighborhood or an endorsement of the providers below. Prices are examples from each business, not a citywide average; availability and suitability require a direct conversation.

Choose the entrance before the outing

Three dog-run areas and one emergency destination.

These dog-run locations appear in Philadelphia Parks & Recreation’s official dog guidance: Schuylkill River Park at 25th and Spruce, Columbus Square at 1200 Wharton Street, and Pretzel Park at 4300 Silverwood Street. They offer different starting points for a neighborhood plan; they are not permission to let a dog loose throughout the surrounding park.

Open directions ↗

For a first visit, scout the gate without committing to entry. Notice whether another dog is crowding the entrance and whether your own dog can wait calmly outside. A sniffing walk on leash can be the entire outing. Do not make participation in group play the test of a successful day. These map searches help locate a destination; they do not show live gate access, cleanliness or the number of dogs inside.

Philadelphia has its own licensing route

Keep the city rules separate from statewide fee tables.

ACCT Philly handles Philadelphia dog licenses. Its guidance requires licensing and rabies vaccination for dogs four months and older. The city code lists annual fees of $16 for a spayed or neutered dog and $40 otherwise, and a 30-day application deadline when acquiring a dog or bringing one into the city from outside. Pennsylvania’s county-treasurer directory directs Philadelphia applicants to ACCT; a statewide fee table is not a substitute for the city process.

Use the ACCT application and supply the rabies documentation it requests. If you do not have the record, contact the veterinarian rather than guessing an expiry date. Keep a readable copy with the caregiver’s instructions and put renewal on your own calendar. A paid boarding reservation does not take care of licensing for you.

A leash rule and a carrier rule solve different problems.

The city’s park guidance sets a six-foot leash limit outside authorized dog runs and excludes ordinary pets from playgrounds, ballfields, spraygrounds, athletic courts and gardens. It also asks owners to avoid wet grass and clean up waste. Read the dog run’s posted rules before entry; local volunteer organizations manage runs with Parks oversight.

SEPTA’s pet rule requires a standard, sturdy, nonobstructive carrier, and the animal must not be disruptive. This also applies to companion, therapy, comfort and emotional-support animals; service animals are treated separately. A leash alone does not meet the ordinary-pet requirement. Before booking care across town, test whether your dog can settle in the carrier and whether you can carry it safely for the whole journey. If that is not realistic, confirm a different transport method before paying.

Compare the arrangement, not just the headline rate

Three published offers with very different boundaries.

Contact the actual operator and location. None of these listings establishes that a business is accepting your dog, has been inspected by PupNudge, or can accommodate a particular medical or behavioral need.

Daycare, boarding and grooming

BarkPark Philly: ask which of its two addresses handles your service.

The business lists 1715 McKean Street and 4805 Woodland Avenue. Its price page shows daycare at $38 half-day or $47 full-day, with a $5 surcharge for bookings less than 24 hours ahead. Boarding is $90 per 24 hours; an extra walk is $15. Grooming starts at $70 for a bath package, $85 small, $95 medium and $115 large grooms, with extra-large grooms over 60 pounds starting at $150.

The page says grooming depends on size, service and temperament; the booking quote is not the final price. Ask for the branch, coat assessment and an approval limit for additional work. Confirm the half-day cutoff and boarding pickup time rather than assuming they match another operator’s definitions.

Boarding in a home

Philly Dog School: daycare is a separate charge.

Its boarding policy is for established daycare clients; new clients must attend daycare at least once before boarding. Care takes place in an employee’s home or your home, subject to staff availability. Published rates are $65 for Monday–Thursday nights and $100 for Friday–Sunday nights, based on 24 hours, with $25 for time beyond that window.

Weekday daycare is not included. Holiday charges can add $25 and nearby holiday dates $15. A nonrefundable deposit is credited to the invoice; the balance is due 48 hours before arrival. Obtain the dated calendar, full daycare charges and the actual handover address. A store location is not necessarily where the dog sleeps.

Airport-area facility · dated menu

Philly Pet Hotel: verify the older menu before relying on it.

7401 Holstein Avenue · 215-365-4555. The linked price menu is dated June 21, 2024. It lists a Standard Suite at $80 per night and requires at least one interactive activity per full boarding day; a 15-minute stroll is listed at $10. Friday or Saturday check-in carries a two-night minimum.

This is evidence of the charging structure, not a confirmed 2026 quotation. Ask for a current written total. The menu distinguishes round-the-clock staffing from lobby opening hours and says injectable medications are not accepted. Tell staff about the prescribed care your dog needs before reserving; staffing overnight does not establish suitability for that care.

Turn a rate into a trip total

Put dates, pickup time and compulsory extras on the same sheet.

Send each provider the same request: “One dog, these check-in and checkout times, this sleeping arrangement, these care instructions. Please list every compulsory charge, the deposit credited toward the bill, the cancellation deadline and the final amount payable.” Include coat condition for grooming, whether group daycare is acceptable, and any veterinarian-prescribed care the provider would have to deliver.

A useful comparison has five lines: base stay; required activity or daycare; transport; late pickup or holiday charges; and optional services you have actually chosen. Deposits credited toward the invoice are payments toward the total, not another service fee. Refund restrictions still matter even when the total is the same.

A lower total does not settle supervision, isolation space, handling or emergency arrangements. Use our care-provider question guide for that conversation, and keep the answer with the quote.

A smaller outing can be the better plan

Give the walker a fallback they can use without another phone call.

Open the National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly forecast for the address and hour you intend to go. Regional headlines are not a forecast for a particular sidewalk. This page does not stream current weather, river conditions or dog-run closures.

For a row-home pickup, write a short doorstep-to-block route and a separate longer route. The short route is useful when the dog seems unsettled, the pavement is uncomfortable or rain makes the preferred outing impractical. It should end at home, not depend on an open dog run or a long walk back from the river. Do not ask the caregiver to complete a distance target regardless of conditions.

Use a handover note that describes the house.

  1. Door sequence: identify the secure room or barrier where the dog waits while the outer door opens. Fit the harness and attach the leash before crossing the threshold.
  2. Meeting other dogs: state whether to cross the street, wait or turn back. Avoid making a narrow stoop or doorway the introduction point.
  3. After a wet walk: leave a towel, water and the usual rest space ready. Ask for a brief report on what the dog did, not an unsupported diagnosis.
  4. If the preferred route is blocked: use the named shorter route. Keep emergency transport details separate from routine walk directions.

For care inside your home, agree how keys are returned and who else may enter during the booking. Send door codes directly to the caregiver, not in a public listing or review. A sample note might read: “Wait in the kitchen behind the gate while opening the front door. Use the short block loop if the dog is reluctant. No dog-run visit today. Call me if the usual routine changes.” Adapt it to the real home and dog.

The emergency line is different from the appointment line

Save Ryan Hospital before you need it.

Penn Vet’s current Ryan Hospital pages list 215-746-8911 for emergencies and 215-746-8387 for appointments. Use the emergency number when deciding where to bring a dog with an urgent problem. Do not rely on an older directory’s general switchboard number. The hospital is at 3900 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.

The hospital’s arrival guidance describes a 24-hour service, but notes that patients may sometimes be diverted. During normal hours a parking attendant directs arrivals; at night or without an attendant, its instructions are to proceed to the front entrance by car. Call for the current route and triage instructions. Arrival order does not determine treatment order.

Give a caregiver your contact, the regular veterinarian’s contact and authority to seek care if you cannot be reached. Carry current records and a factual timeline of the problem. This guide cannot diagnose an illness or decide whether waiting is safe; that question belongs with the veterinary team.

Questions that change the booking

Philadelphia care questions, answered directly.

Can my leashed dog ride SEPTA without a carrier?

Ordinary pets need a standard sturdy carrier. A leash alone does not satisfy SEPTA’s rule. Arrange a different journey if an appropriate carrier is impractical.

Do I use the statewide Pennsylvania license fee?

For Philadelphia, use ACCT Philly’s city process. Confirm the city fee and requested records on the linked application rather than copying another county’s fee.

Does a park address mean off-leash access throughout the park?

No. Use the authorized dog run and its posted rules. Outside that area, keep the dog leashed and avoid the city’s pet-restricted facilities.

Which boarding arrangement is best for a dog that avoids group play?

Ask who provides individual care, where the dog rests and how toilet breaks happen. A home setting can still contain other animals. The business must confirm a suitable arrangement for your dog; the setting’s name alone is not enough.

Can I treat the Pet Hotel menu as a current final price?

No. The linked document is dated 2024. Ask for a fresh quote including the minimum stay, required activity and pickup conditions before paying.

What should I leave for someone collecting my dog from a row home?

A secure door sequence, fitted walking equipment, the agreed route and an alternative, access instructions sent privately, and the emergency destination. Make the note brief enough to use at the door.
