LOS ANGELES · THE CITY FIELD GUIDE
More sunshine.
A smarter
dog day.
Where to go, which rules apply, and how to plan care on your side of Los Angeles.
Start with your neighborhood and the dog in front of you. Compare four official dog-park locations, sort out city versus county services, and make a care plan that accounts for heat and travel.

START WITH THE RIGHT QUESTION
One city. Several different decisions.
Moving here?
Find the animal-service agency for your actual home address before applying for a license. A Los Angeles mailing address alone is not a dependable way to establish jurisdiction. Collect your dog's rabies and sterilization records, and check your lease separately.
Find the correct agency →Going out today?
Choose a nearby destination and a shorter alternative first. Check the local forecast, ground surface and posted park notices. A long cross-city drive followed by a busy dog-park entrance may be a poor first outing for an unsettled dog.
Compare four starting locations →FOUR LOCAL STARTING POINTS
Find your side
of Los Angeles.
These are officially listed dog parks, not a ranked list of the “best” parks. Choose a practical location, then assess conditions and your dog's comfort on arrival. The fenced dog area is distinct from the surrounding park.
SAN FERNANDO VALLEY · ENCINO
Sepulveda Basin Off-Leash Dog Park
17550 Victory Boulevard, Encino, CA 91406
Why start here: a dog-park location for a Valley outing without assuming you need to travel to the coast. The city lists it at Victory Boulevard; do not navigate simply to “Sepulveda Basin,” which covers a much larger area.
Before entering: find the correct gate and posted dog-area rules. Keep the leash on until inside the permitted enclosure. If your dog needs space from other dogs, choose a suitable on-leash alternative instead of entering a crowded gate.
- Published hours
- Sunrise to sunset
- Schedule check
- Municipal Code §63.44 sets the dog exercise area’s daily window. A current recurring maintenance closure was not confirmed.
- Layout & facilities
- The park’s community organization describes separate large, small and timid-dog enclosures, grass, trees and water fountains. These are described amenities, not a live condition check.
Check the published park information ↗
Directions to this dog park ↗SILVER LAKE
Silverlake Dog Park
1863 Silver Lake Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90026
Why start here: a specific dog-area destination near the reservoir rather than treating the whole recreation area as off-leash space. Use the dog-park name and address from the city's dog-park directory.
A useful address distinction: the recreation center also appears in public records at 1850 West Silver Lake Drive. That is not the dog-park address used in the city directory. Confirm the entrance rather than relying on a generic recreation-center pin.
- Published hours
- 6 a.m.–10 p.m.; Wednesday opens at 8:30 a.m.
- Schedule check
- The city’s Stormwater Program lists a Wednesday 6–8:30 a.m. closure. Follow any newer notice at the gate.
- Layout & facilities
- The same city source describes separate small- and large-dog areas. Surface, working water access and usable shade were not confirmed for today.
Check the published park information ↗
Directions to the dog-park entrance area ↗WESTSIDE · WESTWOOD
Westwood Dog Park
1350 Sepulveda Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90025
Why start here: a city-listed dog area on the Westside. The recreation center has other facilities; a dog-park listing does not extend off-leash permission to sports areas, playgrounds or every path.
Before setting off: check destination notices and allow time to find the designated enclosure. Keep your arrival manageable: water and a calm exit plan are more useful than a fixed target for how long your dog should play.
- Published hours
- 6:30 a.m.–10 p.m.; Tuesday opens at 9 a.m.
- Schedule check
- The city’s Stormwater Program lists the later Tuesday opening. A published closing time does not establish that the dog area is well lit.
- Layout & facilities
- The city describes a gated dog area with low hills. Current ground material and a separate small-dog enclosure were not confirmed from the sources checked.
Check the published park information ↗
Directions to Westwood Dog Park ↗NORTHEAST LOS ANGELES · HERMON
Hermon Park in the Arroyo Seco Dog Park
5566 Via Marisol, Los Angeles, CA 90042
Why start here: an officially listed dog-park option in northeast LA. Navigate to the dog area at Hermon Park rather than a general Arroyo Seco destination.
For a first visit: look at the entrance, the dogs already inside and your dog's response before committing. Leave if the situation becomes difficult; a dog park is optional enrichment, not a socialization test your dog must pass.
- Published hours
- Sunrise to sunset
- Schedule check
- The city’s Stormwater Program lists this daily window. A recurring maintenance closure was not confirmed.
- Layout & facilities
- The city describes separate small- and large-dog areas. Current surface, drinking-water availability and shade were not confirmed.
Check the published park information ↗
Directions to Hermon Dog Park ↗Addresses: LA Recreation and Parks dog-park directory. Schedules above are published guidance checked October 6, 2026, not live opening confirmations. Addresses follow the Parks directory; the Stormwater article uses slightly different address wording for Silver Lake and Hermon. Parking fees, accessible bays and current space availability were not verified. Check posted parking restrictions and keep your dog leashed between your vehicle and the enclosure. Bring your own water; inspect the ground and shade before entering.
How to decide whether to enter
Pause outside the entrance without blocking it. Check the posted restrictions, enclosure and exit. If your dog is ill, recovering, easily overwhelmed or has a bite-risk concern, ask your veterinarian or a qualified professional about appropriate activities instead of using an off-leash group setting. For ordinary leash practice, start with a manageable reward-based routine.
CHOOSE BY YOUR DOG’S NEED
A shorter route to a useful decision.
Small dog, first park visit
Silver Lake and Hermon have published small-dog areas; Sepulveda’s community organization also describes a small-dog section. Check the gate label and dogs inside before entering. A size-separated area can still be busy: start with a short visit and leave before your dog struggles.
Your dog needs distance
Sepulveda’s timid-dog section is an option to investigate, not a promise of an empty space. If your dog is fearful, reactive or at risk of biting, skip group play and choose an on-leash route where you can maintain distance. Arrange individual professional help rather than trying to “get used to it” at a crowded gate.
No car
Choose a destination you can reach and leave comfortably. Check the complete Metro route and enclosed-carrier requirement before departing; a large dog that cannot use a suitable carrier needs another transport plan. Do not turn an unsuitable journey into a long, hot walk. Save a return route and an emergency transport contact.
A limited budget or an upcoming trip
For routine care, request one complete quote for the exact task instead of adding a package you do not need. For boarding, ask about admission and a trial before paying for your trip’s dates. If sterilization cost is the issue, check the address-based assistance programs below rather than comparing unrelated grooming discounts.
THE ADDRESS MATTERS
LA City is not
all of LA County.
Licensing, animal-control assistance and financial-support eligibility depend on jurisdiction. Begin with the address you live at, or where an animal incident occurred.
| Your task | Practical next step | Official starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Find the responsible agency | Enter an address in the county service-area locator. It identifies the serving animal agency; don't assume County DACC handles every city. | Animal service-area locator ↗ |
| License a dog in LA City | LA Animal Services says dogs over four months kept in the city must be licensed. Prepare a current rabies certificate and sterilization documentation. Review exemptions or intact-dog requirements with the agency. | City licensing & application ↗ |
| Live in a County DACC service area | Use DACC's licensing instructions and applicable fee schedule after confirming coverage. Do not apply the City of LA fee table to a different jurisdiction. | County licensing ↗ |
| Ride LA Metro with a pet | Ordinary pets and emotional-support animals must be secured in an enclosed carrier, without obstructing aisles or doors or inconveniencing other riders. A leash alone is not the ordinary-pet rule. Service animals are a separate category. | Metro pet-carrier rules ↗ |
| Plan a beach visit | LA County Beaches and Harbors lists no animals on county beaches. Do not interpret permission on an adjacent walking route as permission on the sand. Check the managing authority for the exact destination and applicable exceptions. | County beach rules ↗ |
Need help with sterilization costs?
LA Animal Services describes discount coupons for city residents and free certificates for qualifying low-income residents, with participating providers. Check eligibility, approval and provider participation before booking. Ask which costs are covered and whether additional charges apply; a program application is not an appointment.

PLAN FOR THE CONDITIONS
A forecast is
only the beginning.
Air temperature does not tell you the temperature of the ground. Plan around the actual route, available shade and your dog's needs, rather than a universal “safe” clock time.
Before the outing
Check National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard for your destination's forecast and alerts. Choose cooler conditions, bring water, take breaks and avoid hot asphalt or sand. AVMA notes higher exercise risk for overweight and short-nosed dogs; discuss individual limits with your veterinarian.
If the route isn't suitable
Shorten or postpone the walk. Use a brief comfortable toilet outing and calm indoor activities rather than trying to meet a distance target. Boots do not remove overheating risk. Never leave your dog waiting in a parked vehicle, including while you check in at a provider.
Stop and get help for concerning signs
AVMA lists signs including excessive panting or drooling, unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color, and collapse as reasons to seek emergency veterinary care. If you are worried about heat illness, contact an emergency hospital promptly; do not wait to finish a checklist or find a deal.

LOCAL PRICES YOU CAN CHECK
Five starting points.
Different kinds of care.
Published provider prices checked October 6, 2026. These are candidates to contact, not tested recommendations or a citywide average. Availability, final quotes and suitability must be confirmed directly.
Published example: an 8–20 lb short-haired dog’s hygiene package is $55; the standard-breed full groom for that weight is $69. Its long-hair full-groom category is $90 for 8–20 lb dogs. These categories describe different work.
Before booking: appointments and vaccine information are required, including current rabies vaccination. Ask whether coat work exceeds the included 15 minutes and which handling supplements apply. The menu also lists extra charges, so request the complete quote.
Grooming menu & booking requirements ↗GROOMING · ECHO PARK
Glow Up Pup
1640 W Temple Street, Suite 2
Los Angeles, CA 90026
Published example: Wash n Go is listed at $35–$100, with bath, drying and brushing; Mini Groom is $65–$200 and adds face, feet and sanitary trimming, nails and ears. Neither is automatically a complete body haircut.
Before booking: the booking menu says price depends on size and coat condition. Use its consultation option to agree on the work and estimate; confirm vaccination and handling requirements directly before reserving.
Service menu & appointment options ↗Published example: personal suites start at $75/night, including a non-social option. A private-yard open-room option is $95/night. The menu lists a $10/night holiday supplement and noon checkout; its terms describe a $24 late-pickup charge when no exit bath or groom is booked.
Before booking: its vaccine-upload page requires current rabies, Bordetella and distemper/parvo records. Confirm the room type, holiday dates, admission assessment, medication procedures and emergency transport. A private sleeping space does not by itself establish daytime separation.
Rates & checkout terms ↗ · Required vaccine records ↗TRAINING & BOARDING · HOLLYWOOD
Dog-E-Den Hollywood
7551 W Sunset Boulevard, Suite 100
Los Angeles, CA 90046
Published example: private training is $120 for approximately one hour in-store or $150 at home. Ordinary boarding lists shared sleeping at $79/night, a private room at $85 and a private suite at $92; holiday periods add $10/night. Board-and-train is a separate service with a ten-day minimum.
Before booking: boarding requires a reservation. Ask about vaccination records and the temperament assessment, daytime group participation, cancellation and pickup terms. For training, confirm the methods and tools in writing and whether an individual session suits the actual concern; a private bedroom does not mean private daytime care.
Training scope & rates ↗ · Boarding arrangements & terms ↗IN-HOME TRAINING · LOS ANGELES AREA
Happy Puppy L.A.
Confirm service coverage for your home address before booking.
Published example: one 90-minute in-home session is $549, with a listed rescue-dog rate of $495. The three-session package is $529 per session, expires after one year and is non-refundable.
Before booking: the provider states it uses positive reinforcement without shock, prong or choke collars. Start with its complimentary 15-minute new-client phone consultation to discuss the task, coverage and availability. Its $399/calendar-day board-and-train offering is different from ordinary overnight boarding and has limited, case-by-case availability.
Training methods, prices & package conditions ↗COMPARE THE SERVICE YOU WILL ACTUALLY GET
A useful quote.
A clear handoff.
The right comparison is a complete service for your dog at a confirmed address. A low headline price can describe a different coat, size, session length or booking condition.
Grooming: describe the coat and handling
Provide weight, coat type, condition and any handling concerns. Ask which brushing, drying, nail and coat services are included, what triggers supplements, and how staff handle a dog that needs a break. Request the final quote before authorizing extra work. Use the breed library as a discussion aid, not a substitute for assessing this dog's coat.
Training: describe the actual moment
Explain the trigger and setting: barking at a shared entrance, pulling on a busy sidewalk, or difficulty settling at home. Ask about reward-based methods, group suitability and what happens if your dog becomes distressed. A routine class is not a substitute for help with pain, severe distress or bite risk.
Boarding: plan arrival and the backup
Confirm required records, supervision, sleeping arrangements, trial-visit options, medication procedures and late pickup charges. Give a concise written routine plus the adult authorized to make decisions and the veterinary contact. Ask which emergency hospital staff use and who arranges transport.

QUESTIONS THAT CHANGE THE PLAN
Clear up the common mix-ups.
Do I license my dog with LA City or LA County?
Find the serving agency using your home address in the county locator. LA City and County DACC are different agencies, and other cities can have their own arrangements. Follow the agency's application and fee instructions.
Can I take my pet dog onto a county beach if it stays on leash?
County Beaches and Harbors lists no animals on its beaches. A leash does not itself create beach access. Check the exact beach authority, posted rules and applicable exceptions; permission on an adjacent route does not extend automatically to the sand.
Is the temperature in my weather app enough to judge a walk?
No. Air temperature is not ground temperature, and individual risk varies. Avoid hot surfaces, adapt duration and seek veterinary advice about your dog's needs. Do not use this page as a temperature-based medical clearance.
Are the emergency hospitals listed here all in LA City?
No. West LA and Woodland Hills are LA locations; Culver City is a separate city in the wider area. The location labels distinguish them. Choose an appropriate hospital based on your situation and call for instructions; this is not live routing or capacity information.
Does the lowest quote mean the best provider?
No. The calculator only adds your numbers. Compare handling, supervision, service scope, records, cancellation conditions and travel before choosing. A discount does not verify professional qualifications or suitability.
Do I need a paid PupNudge plan to use this guide?
No. This guide and its tools are free. For everyday routine questions, start an assessment. Optional Plus materials support self-directed practice; they do not provide veterinary care.
