HONOLULU · THE CITY FIELD GUIDE
Honolulu.
Arrival settled.
Routine next.
Plan Honolulu pet arrival separately from local care; compare small-dog daycare, boarding, haircut scope and private training with clear booking limits.
An airline reservation, an approved animal-entry application and a daycare booking are three different arrangements. Keep each one visible.

First resolve arrival; then book the dog's routine
Moving a dog to Honolulu is not the same as arranging an ordinary mainland trip. Hawaii's Animal Quarantine Branch distinguishes entry routes and eligibility. Start with its current checklist for your dog's origin and itinerary. A returning Hawaii-resident dog uses different paperwork from a dog arriving from outside the state.
The State now offers the Hawaii Pet Owner Portal for applications and supporting documents. An uploaded application still requires staff review and approval. Do not treat a payment receipt, airline confirmation or local boarding reservation as permission for airport release. Check the current health-certificate advisories with the certifying veterinarian as well.
After entry is settled, plan a quiet first destination with the dog's familiar bedding and instructions. Explain travel timing to the caregiver and ask whether a trial visit is needed before overnight care. There is no benefit in buying a daycare pack the dog cannot yet use.
Separate the laboratory clock, collection window and local identification
The official Honolulu arrival checklist requires microchip identification, qualifying rabies records and a passing FAVN test with the required waiting period. Do not count from the day your veterinarian draws blood: the eligible date depends on the receiving laboratory's timeline. Have the branch confirm your dog's record rather than estimating it from a calendar.
The checklist describes normal airport inspection hours as 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., subject to change. Delivery to the inspection facility can take time after landing. Confirm collection arrangements before choosing a late flight. If someone else will collect, settle the authorized-handler paperwork and transport with the branch and airline.
For local identification, Hawaiian Humane says Honolulu replaced dog licensing in 2020 with microchip requirements for dogs aged three months and older. Register current owner contacts with the chip database and update them after moving. A visible phone-number tag remains useful; an implanted chip with obsolete contacts is an unfinished identification task.
A nearby green space is not automatically a dog park
The City's dog-park list separates on-leash parks from off-leash facilities. Mother Waldron, Kalo Place and Ala Wai have designated off-leash entries; their surrounding park spaces should not be treated as one unrestricted run. Check signs and the exact designated boundary on arrival.
The City also publishes newly added on-leash locations, so use the current list rather than an old general claim that dogs may enter every park or almost none. A beach-park listing is not blanket permission for every shoreline, swimming area or neighboring property. For a dog tired after travel, use a short controlled outing instead of a crowded play session.
The map also includes Hawaiian Humane's Mōʻiliʻili campus at 2700 Waiʻalae Avenue for identification resources, and VERC for medical care. Neither pin is the airport inspection facility. Keep the destination name and purpose on your handover note.

ALOHA DOG · small-dog care has a size limit
525B Cummins Street · 808-591-1727. Its daycare page describes care for dogs between 6 and 20 pounds and a required evaluation. The current top rate block lists $45 for a full day and $35 for four hours, before tax; older rate blocks also appear below it. Ask the business to confirm the current rate in writing.
Weekday hours are 7:30 a.m.–7 p.m. Late collection can create further charges or overnight care. Ask for the applicable cutoff and fees before linking collection to a flight. Do not book a heavier dog on the assumption that a general “cage-free” description means every size is accepted.
The Paw Patch · price the hours you actually need
Kalaepōhaku, Oʻahu · 808-585-1321. The service menu lists daycare at $55 for 1–4 hours, $65 for 4–8 hours and $75 for 8–12 hours. One-dog overnight boarding is $85, and the initial Meet & Greet is $25.
Weekend daycare and holidays carry an additional $15 fee. Confirm how a particular stay is charged, any tax, the exact venue and handover time. Ask what care looks like when the dog needs rest rather than social play. A published overnight price does not establish a 24-hour billing unit or transport from the airport.
Doggy Box · ask for Plumeria if you need a haircut
856 Ilaniwai Street · 808-983-9553. The salon's package page distinguishes Hibiscus basic care from Plumeria premium grooming, which adds the haircut and styling. Published prices depend on breed, size, style and coat condition; there is no reliable flat haircut price to reproduce here.
Appointments are required. Ask for the package, intended cut, drying, nail work and any matting charge in one written estimate. The page asks for current rabies records; confirm how that business requirement applies to your dog with the salon and veterinarian. An after-beach refresh bath is a separate service, not a full cut.
Loving Dog Training · the household learns between sessions
Loving Dog Training advertises force-free, positive private puppy coaching on Oʻahu: $799 for six weekly one-hour sessions, with a tailored routine and text support. It describes work at home, in the neighborhood and at relevant outing locations.
Use its contact form to confirm Honolulu coverage, puppy suitability, travel charges and the venue for each lesson. Explain the actual task—settling after arrival, calm carrier entry or a manageable handover—rather than buying a vague obedience promise. Medical concerns or serious distress need suitable professional assessment beyond a routine puppy package.
Keep travel charges outside the local care comparison
ALOHA DOG lists a three-month ten-full-day pass at $410. Ten $45 visits would be $450 before tax. Confirm the current menu and usable visits before comparing the $40 difference; older blocks remain on the page.
At Paw Patch, an eight-to-twelve-hour weekend daycare visit would start from the published $75 plus $15 supplement, or $90 before any applicable tax and first-visit charge. Get agreement on your exact duration. State arrival fees, airline transport and a haircut are separate costs. The care comparison checklist keeps like-for-like services together.
Have an arrival-delay plan that does not depend on one phone
Check the National Weather Service Honolulu forecast and your airline's operational updates. A changed flight can affect both inspection and a caregiver's reception window. Save the contacts on paper, and tell the authorized collector and care provider when the schedule changes.
Confirm who can receive the dog if the intended handover is no longer possible. Ask the caregiver whether a delay changes the charge, whether another collector needs identification and how the dog's familiar food and veterinarian's instructions will reach the alternate destination. Do this before travel, when you can still choose a workable arrangement.
Use a hospital for a medical concern, not an entry-document problem
Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center of Hawaii publishes 24/7 emergency care at 345 North Nimitz Highway, Unit C, 808-735-7735. Call for receiving instructions when the dog needs urgent medical help. Quarantine eligibility and release authorization belong with the State branch, not a daycare business or this guide.
Honolulu arrival and care questions
Does paying the online entry application guarantee airport release?
No. The State reviews the documents and must approve eligibility. Follow the checklist for your dog's origin and itinerary.
Can I count the FAVN waiting period from the blood draw?
No. Use the official eligible date and laboratory-receipt rules, confirmed with the branch. The draw date alone is insufficient.
Do I need to buy an old Honolulu dog license tag?
Hawaiian Humane says the local system was replaced by microchip requirements. Keep registry contacts current and use visible contact identification too.
Does a dog-park map mean the whole park is off leash?
No. Use the designated off-leash area and posted boundaries. Other listed parks allow dogs on leash.
Can a 30-pound dog attend ALOHA DOG daycare?
Its current page specifies 6–20 pounds. Seek a suitable provider rather than assuming an exception.
Can I compare Doggy Box's refresh bath with a full haircut?
No. Ask for the Plumeria haircut scope and a coat-specific quote. A refresh bath does not include the same work.
